Introduction to the Border Collie

The Border Collie is often hailed as the most intelligent dog breed in the world. Originally bred for herding sheep in the borderlands between England and Scotland, they are alert, energetic, and exceptionally trainable. At Halo Dogs, our team understands the needs of working and companion Border Collies alike—providing the perfect mix of stimulation and structure to ensure their wellbeing while you’re away.

Detailed Description of the Breed

Physical Characteristics

Border Collies are medium-sized dogs with an athletic, agile build. Males typically weigh between 14–20 kg and females slightly less. They are known for their intense gaze—called “the eye”—used to control livestock. Their coats can be rough or smooth and come in various colours including black and white, red and white, tricolour, and merle.

Personality and Temperament

Border Collies are bright, alert, and highly energetic. They form strong bonds with their humans and require both physical exercise and mental challenges to stay balanced. Without proper engagement, they may become bored or anxious. That’s why Halo Dogs offers structured enrichment activities, open countryside play, and expert training programs ideal for the Border Collie mind.

Coat, Colours, and Grooming Needs

Coat

Border Collies can have rough or smooth double coats that require regular grooming. Their fur sheds seasonally and benefits from brushing several times a week to avoid mats and tangles.

Colours

They come in a variety of colours and patterns—black and white being the most iconic—though red, blue merle, sable, and tricolour variations are also common and beautiful.

Grooming

Grooming a Border Collie includes routine brushing, bathing when needed, and keeping their ears, teeth, and nails in top condition. Our grooming service at Halo Dogs helps maintain your Border Collie’s appearance and comfort during their stay.

Health and Longevity

Common Health Concerns

  • Hip Dysplasia: A common joint issue in active breeds.
  • Epilepsy: Border Collies can be genetically predisposed.
  • Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA): An inherited eye condition.
  • Deafness: Seen occasionally, especially in merle-coloured dogs.

At Halo Dogs, our team is trained to understand these breed-specific health issues and monitor your Border Collie’s wellness carefully throughout their visit.

Lifespan

With attentive care, Border Collies typically enjoy long, healthy lives ranging from 12 to 15 years. Our priority at Halo Dogs is to support their health and happiness throughout every stage of life.

History of the Border Collie

Border Collies originated in the border region between Scotland and England. Bred for herding, their intelligence and stamina have made them essential working dogs for centuries. Today, they’re equally treasured as active family pets and top performers in agility and obedience competitions.

Famous Border Collies

One of the most famous Border Collies is “Chaser,” who reportedly knew the names of over 1,000 objects. Border Collies have also starred in films and shows like *Babe* and *Snow Dogs*, showcasing their trainability and personality.

London, UK – After 16 years of meticulous planning, development, and refinement, Halo Dogs is pleased to announce the official debut of its revolutionary luxury dog hotel and daycare facility set on 540 acres of private countryside in North London. Replacing outdated kennel models with a purpose-built resort for dogs, Halo Dogs introduces a new standard in dog care — a true holiday experience designed around canine wellbeing, socialisation, and freedom.

The First Dog Day Care to be Licensed For 100 Dogs

Originally founded as a registered charity in 2009 by Master Dog Trainer and Approved Instructor Justin Kumaran, Halo Dogs began as a rescue and rehabilitation centre. Today, it is one of the largest and most respected dog daycare and training providers in the UK, combining first-class facilities, expert-led care, and a uniquely enriching environment. As the first licensed daycare in London for 100 dogs per day and having welcomed over half a million visits since its founding, Halo Dogs has set the benchmark for innovation and excellence in the industry.

No Kennels, No Cages

Unlike conventional kennels that rely on cages and confinement, Halo Dogs offers a cage-free, five-star resort-style experience with tailored playgroups, climate-controlled private suites, daily enrichment activities, and an on-site veterinary nurse. The expansive estate provides dogs with real off-lead adventure across secure fields, woodland trails, splash zones, and quiet lounges. Every aspect of care is designed to meet the physical, social, and emotional needs of each dog.

Where Dogs Really Go on Holiday

“We built Halo Dogs because we knew dogs deserved more. Not just a place to stay, but a place to thrive,” says Kumaran. “This isn’t a kennel — it’s a reimagining of what dog care should be. Here, dogs play, rest, learn, and connect under expert supervision. It’s where dogs really go on holiday.”

A Team of Qualified Trainers, Behaviourists and Vet staff

Halo Dogs also provides a wide range of services beyond dog boarding in the UK, including expert training, agility, grooming, and a luxury chauffeur service for families in North London, Hertfordshire, and Essex. The team, comprised entirely of qualified trainers and behaviourists, works in partnership with Creature Comforts Vets and the Royal Veterinary College to ensure 24/7 medical readiness.

Originally bred for trailing deer and people, today’s Bloodhound is a calm, loving companion who benefits from mental stimulation, structured socialisation, and outdoor adventure—all of which are core to our services at Halo Dogs.

Breed Characteristics

Physical Appearance

Bloodhounds are large, powerful dogs with long, wrinkled skin and iconic droopy ears. They typically weigh 36–50 kg and stand 58–69 cm tall. Their deep-set eyes, loose facial skin, and muscular frame give them a unique, expressive appearance.

Their tracking drive is incredibly strong, making scent-based games and monitored outdoor exploration ideal. At Halo Dogs, we nurture these instincts with enrichment programs and secure open spaces.

Grooming Needs

Bloodhounds have a short, dense coat that’s easy to maintain with regular brushing. Their long ears and facial folds need routine cleaning to prevent infections. Our grooming packages include ear cleaning, bathing, coat care, and nail trimming—all performed with calm, gentle handling.

  • Bloat (Gastric Torsion): Meal scheduling and monitored exercise help reduce risk.
  • Skin Infections: Folds in their skin need regular care and hygiene.

Man Charged After 37 Dogs Found Dead at Essex Animal Rescue Centre

Published: 11 July 2025

Grisly Discovery in Billericay

Essex Police raid the house of Oaveed Rahman, 25, of Hope Road in Crays Hill, save a paw rescue

Essex Police have charged a man after 37 dogs were found dead at Save a Paw UK, an animal rescue centre in Billericay. The remains were discovered during a joint investigation in May by Essex Police, the RSPCA, and Basildon Borough Council. In addition to the dead animals, 20 other dogs were seized for their safety and wellbeing.

Charges Brought After Eight Weeks

Two men were initially arrested at a property in the Crays Hill area. Following an eight-week investigation, one of them, Oaveed Rahman, 25, of Hope Road, Billericay, has now been formally charged with multiple animal welfare offences. A woman arrested in June and the second man remain on conditional police bail while the investigation continues.

Community Shock and Police Response

In a statement, Essex Police acknowledged the emotional impact the case has had on the local community: “We understand the public’s distress following the discovery of dog remains. This is a highly complex case requiring meticulous review of evidence. Our commitment is unwavering—we want justice for these animals.”

Support from RSPCA and Local Council

Officers worked closely with the RSPCA and Basildon Borough Council in what has been described as one of the most harrowing animal welfare investigations in the region’s recent history. The organisations continue to monitor the condition of the rescued animals.

How You Can Help

If you have any information about this case or wish to support animal rescue efforts, you can contact the RSPCA or visit our Halo Dogs Rescue & Rehabilitation Charity.

Final Thoughts

This case is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance, regulation, and transparency in animal rescue operations. We hope justice is served swiftly and that the surviving dogs receive the care and compassion they deserve.

Halo Dogs Reaches Impressive Milestone at its Doggie Daycare

Published: September 9, 2021

A Remarkable Journey from Rescue to World-Class Daycare

Dedicated Halo Dogs staff supervising happy dogs playing in a spacious countryside field on the 540-acre estate

Founded in 2009 by Master Dog Trainer Justin Kumaran MGoDT(MT), Halo Dogs began as a humble canine rescue charity in London. Today, it stands as one of the largest dog daycare and education centres in the world.

In its latest milestone, Halo Dogs proudly announces that it has now served over 250,000 dogs—a figure that reflects its unwavering commitment to empathy, exercise, and education.

“Because Every Dog Deserves an Education”

“At Halo Dogs, we just don’t teach algebra or Pythagoras’s theorem… yet!” jokes Kumaran. “But dogs communicate their needs clearly: a dog that pulls on a lead needs to be taught how to walk nicely; one that won’t come when called needs recall training; and dogs who react poorly to others need social support. Education builds a bond—it’s the difference between merely living with a dog and truly connecting.”

This guiding philosophy is the foundation of Halo Dogs’ impressive growth, reputation, and the affection it has earned from thousands of happy dog owners.

Tilly the Emaciated Dog Rescued from Abandoned Home is Now Thriving

Published: 10 July 2025

Shocking Discovery in a Vacant Home

Engineers found Tilly surrounded by rubbish and her own waste

In April 2025, a team of engineers from Utilita Energy made a heart-wrenching discovery in an abandoned house in Stoke, Staffordshire. Inside, amidst piles of waste and rubbish, they found a starving dog—later named Tilly—barely clinging to life.

Her spine was protruding, her eyes sunken, and her fur stained. The engineers heard faint whimpering and traced it to a door where Tilly’s frail head emerged, seemingly pleading for help.

Rescue and Recovery

Shaun Dollamore said Tilly had a gentle heart and was thriving in her new home

Tilly was immediately taken to a local veterinary practice, where she was weighed at just 21kg (3st 3lb). She had likely been alone in the home for weeks and was placed on a drip with an uncertain prognosis.

Shaun Dollamore, the Utilita manager on call at the time, said, “That night I tossed and turned. My heart took over. I decided I was going to adopt her.”

A New Beginning

The staff initially named her Zara, but Shaun renamed her Tilly—short for Utilita—after deciding to give her a forever home.

Tilly was rescued almost three months ago but has made a remarkable recovery

Tilly is believed to be between four and nine years old, possibly a mix of Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Boxer, and American Bulldog. Now, just months later, she is thriving with Shaun, his wife, and their senior dog Toby.

The team at Utilita also raised more than £600 to cover Tilly’s vet bills. While the RSPCA was contacted and a police investigation initiated, no outcome has been publicly disclosed.

Shaun’s Reflections

Tilly is enjoying her new life

“The things you see as a field engineer can be heartbreaking,” said Shaun. “But Tilly has a gentle heart and has absolutely captured ours. I know I’ve done the right thing.”
