Golden Retriever Attraction Shuts After Court Case

Dog Petting Experience Shut Down After Animal Welfare Court Case

Date Published: 1 July 2025

The owner of the once-viral Golden Retriever Experience in Somerset has been banned from keeping dogs for 10 years after a court found animals were kept in “disgusting, unclean and cramped” conditions—some resulting in death due to neglect and fighting.

62-year-old Nicolas St James, who operated the attraction in Dunster, was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison—suspended for a year—after pleading guilty to multiple animal welfare offences. The Golden Retriever Experience, which offered visitors petting sessions with up to 30 golden retrievers, gained popularity through social media but was shut down following an RSPCA and Somerset Council investigation.

Conditions Described as ‘Grossly Overcrowded’

In May 2024, inspectors found 20 dogs crammed into a galley kitchen with a concrete floor and others confined to a single bedroom. A local vet confirmed treating several dogs for injuries sustained during fights, with two animals dying from bite wounds. Many had untreated calluses, and the RSPCA stated that fresh water was scarce.

District Judge Brereton condemned St James’ “arrogant” attitude, noting that he ignored four warnings and prioritised his finances over animal welfare.

Whistleblowing Staff Raise the Alarm

Former employee Rhianne Aitken, 34, who worked on-site between May and August 2023, described the job as a “horrible nightmare.” Living in a caravan near the site, she helped care for the animals and was among those who alerted authorities.

“The dogs didn’t have toys or proper affection unless we gave it,” Aitken said. “One nervous dog was placed with an unfamiliar group and was later mauled to death.”

Another former staff member, Maisie Lang, said, “There was no control. The house was dirty—by the end of the day, there’d be black coming out of my nose.”

Licence Revoked and Dogs Rescued

The RSPCA and Somerset Council revoked the attraction’s operating licence after the May 2024 inspection. St James has now dropped his appeal. The 30 golden retrievers were seized and relocated, primarily to an RSPCA facility in Cornwall.

16 very sad golden retrievers being kept in squalid conditions

Suzanne Norbury from the RSPCA said the dogs have since been fostered or adopted into loving homes. One adopter, Bridget Dobinson from Devon, shared that her golden retriever, Molly, arrived traumatised: “She wouldn’t even walk between rooms. A year on, she flops into bed at night, but she’s still scared of loud noises and sudden movements.”

Closure of the Attraction

The Golden Retriever Experience confirmed via its website that it would not reopen. “In light of recent events, we are sorry to say that The Golden Retriever Experience won’t be reopening,” the statement read. Visitors with outstanding gift vouchers were advised to contact the business via email.

Final Thoughts

At Halo Dogs, we strongly condemn the suffering exposed in this case. Proper care, responsible breeding, and safe rehoming are values we champion daily. We support tighter laws and robust enforcement to protect dogs from cruelty and exploitation.

At Halo Dogs, we provide a safe, stimulating environment where Chipins can socialise, play and relax with confidence.

A chipin on a no kennel dog holiday in london with Halo Dogs

Detailed Description of the Chipin

Physical Characteristics

Chipins are small dogs, usually weighing between 2–5kg. They often inherit the lean, athletic body of the Miniature Pinscher and the rounded head and ears of the Chihuahua. Their coat is typically short and smooth, and their stance is proud and confident.

Personality and Temperament

Chipins are known for their alertness, loyalty, and cheeky charisma. They’re intelligent and curious, making them quick learners but also occasionally strong-willed. Chipins thrive on companionship and do best in environments where they feel safe and included—like our personalised care groups at Halo Dogs.

Coat, Colours and Grooming Needs

Coat

The Chipin’s coat is usually short, sleek, and easy to maintain. Some may inherit a slightly denser or more textured coat depending on their Chihuahua parent’s lineage.

Colours

Chipins come in a variety of colours, including black, brown, fawn, tan, chocolate, and combinations of white or sable. Many exhibit striking facial markings and expressive eyebrows.

Grooming Needs

Minimal shedding and low grooming demands make Chipins ideal for busy owners. At Halo Dogs, we provide gentle brushing, ear cleaning, nail trimming and coat conditioning suited to small, short-coated breeds.

Health and Longevity

Common Health Concerns

  • Patellar Luxation: Common in small breeds—our staff are trained to spot early signs of joint issues.
  • Dental Issues: Due to their small jaws, Chipins can experience plaque buildup if not regularly brushed.
  • Cold Sensitivity: Their small size and thin coats can make them prone to chills in winter.
  • Hypoglycaemia: Especially in young or very small Chipins, requiring monitored feeding routines.

Lifespan

With good care, Chipins typically live 12–16 years. At Halo Dogs, we support long-term health through proper nutrition, consistent activity, and individualised wellness plans for each guest.

History of the Chipin

The Chipin is a modern crossbreed developed primarily in the United States as a small companion dog with a feisty yet affectionate temperament. The goal was to combine the confident energy of the Miniature Pinscher with the portable charm of the Chihuahua.

Although not formally recognised by major kennel clubs, Chipins are increasingly popular as urban pets thanks to their compact size, bold personalities, and fierce loyalty. They are particularly suited to households seeking a low-shedding, attentive, and trainable small dog.

At Halo Dogs, Chipins are valued for their alertness, trainability, and zest for play—even when their legs are the shortest on the field!

Welcome to Halo Dogs, the ultimate retreat for Bernedoodles in North London. Surrounded by 540 acres of secure countryside, we offer dog holidays, enrichment-focused dog day care, luxury boarding, professional grooming, and training tailored to this affectionate, intelligent, and loyal crossbreed.

Introduction to the Bernedoodle

Happy Bernedoodle dog enjoying countryside adventures at Halo Dogs London

Detailed Description of the Bernedoodle

Physical Characteristics

Bernedoodles vary in size—standard, mini, or toy—depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Standard Bernedoodles can weigh 25–40kg, with thick, wavy to curly coats. Their build is sturdy, and they often inherit the Bernese’s tricolour markings and expressive eyes.

Personality and Temperament

Affectionate and devoted, Bernedoodles are people-oriented and love being involved in family life. They are playful with children, friendly with strangers, and often display a humorous, goofy side. Their intelligence makes them highly trainable, although some inherit a slight stubborn streak from their Bernese side.

Coat, Colours and Grooming Needs

Coat

Bernedoodles usually have soft, wavy or curly coats that range from low to moderate shedding. Their Poodle influence contributes to hypoallergenic potential, while the Bernese genes add volume and softness.

Colours

The most desirable Bernedoodle coat is tricolour—black, white, and rust—but they also come in sable, merle, black and white, or solid colours. Their markings are often symmetrical and give them a teddy-bear appearance.

Grooming Needs

Regular grooming is essential to prevent matting and maintain coat health. At Halo Dogs, our grooming experts provide coat conditioning, brushing, nail trimming, and sanitary trims tailored to Bernedoodle needs.

Health and Longevity

Common Health Concerns

  • Hip Dysplasia: A potential issue inherited from the Bernese side—monitored with vet care and exercise routines.
  • Skin Sensitivities: Their dense coat may trap moisture, so regular grooming and drying is important.
  • Bloat: As with many large breeds, slow feeding and regular activity reduce the risk of gastric torsion.
  • Eye Conditions: Cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy can occur, particularly in older dogs.

Lifespan

Bernedoodles live 12–15 years on average, depending on size and care. At Halo Dogs, we promote longevity with personalised health monitoring, activity enrichment, and top-tier care tailored to each guest.

History of the Bernedoodle

First bred in the early 2000s in Canada, the Bernedoodle was developed to combine the steady, loving temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and low-shedding qualities of the Poodle. The result was an adaptable, trainable companion suited to a wide range of households.

While not officially recognised by major kennel clubs, Bernedoodles are adored for their affectionate personalities and allergy-friendly coats. They’ve surged in popularity across the UK, Europe, and North America as versatile family pets and emotional support animals.

Today, Bernedoodles are commonly found in urban homes and country estates alike, admired for their soft nature and intelligence—and beloved at Halo Dogs for their eagerness to learn and cuddle alike.

Physical Characteristics

Beagliers are small to medium-sized dogs, usually weighing between 6–13kg. They often inherit the floppy ears and compact frame of both parents, with soft coats that range from short to medium length. Their eyes are expressive and soulful, and their tails wag constantly in excitement.

Personality and Temperament

Known for their affectionate, curious, and social nature, Beagliers love companionship and playtime. They are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement, making them great candidates for obedience training and enrichment activities. They’re gentle with children and enjoy being part of a pack.

Coat, Colours and Grooming Needs

Coat

Most Beagliers have soft, smooth coats with a slight wave, though coat texture may vary depending on the Cavalier or Beagle influence. Their fur is usually of medium density and offers good coverage in colder months.

Colours

Beagliers come in a wide range of colours including tricolour (black, white, tan), lemon and white, ruby, and blenheim. Their markings are typically well-defined, often with symmetrical facial patterns that enhance their expressive look.

Grooming Needs

Beagliers are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Weekly brushing helps control shedding and keeps their coats looking healthy. At Halo Dogs, our grooming team provides ear cleaning, nail trimming, and breed-appropriate bathing to maintain their hygiene and wellbeing.

Health and Longevity

Common Health Concerns

  • Ear Infections: Floppy ears can trap moisture, making regular cleaning essential to prevent infections.
  • Obesity: Beagliers love food; portion control and exercise are important to prevent weight-related issues.
  • Heart Conditions: Cavalier ancestry may increase the risk of heart murmurs and mitral valve disease.
  • Epilepsy: Though rare, seizures have been observed in some Beagliers and are managed with veterinary care.

Lifespan

With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, Beagliers typically live 12–15 years. At Halo Dogs, we support their longevity with customised wellness routines, routine vet checkups, and an enriching, low-stress environment.

History of the Beaglier

The Beaglier was developed in Australia during the 1990s as a cross between two of the world’s most beloved companion breeds: the Beagle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Breeders aimed to balance the Beagle’s energy and tracking instincts with the Cavalier’s calm, affectionate nature.

The result was a friendly, compact dog with reduced scent-drive and less tendency to wander than a full Beagle, making the Beaglier a popular choice for families and first-time dog owners. Although not recognised by major kennel clubs, Beagliers have gained popularity in the UK, Australia, and the US as loving, trainable companions.

Today, the Beaglier continues to grow in popularity thanks to its balanced temperament, manageable size, and adorable appearance—especially in urban settings where compact, sociable dogs are in high demand.

Famous Beagliers

  • Charlie: Owned by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Charlie often appeared in the media and was well-known for his calm nature.

Boston Terrier enjoying countryside day care at Halo Dogs

Introduction to the Boston Terrier

Boston Terriers are famously known as the “American Gentleman” thanks to their tuxedo-like coats and polite nature. They combine affection, alertness, and charm in a compact frame. Not only are they calm and eager to please, but they also thrive with outdoor adventure, social interaction, and positive reinforcement—exactly what Halo Dogs provides.

Breed Characteristics

Physical Appearance

Boston Terriers weigh between 6 and 11kg and stand out with their muscular build, short coat, expressive eyes, and prominent upright ears. Because of their manageable size and short hair, they are easy to groom and enjoy close attention—especially when it includes treats.

Temperament

This breed is affectionate, intelligent, and playful. They form deep bonds with their people and respond well to consistency. Consequently, they love learning new things. That’s why our enrichment and training programmes suit them so well.

Exercise Needs

Boston Terriers enjoy bursts of play rather than long-distance running. For this reason, activities like agility, scent puzzles, and social playgroups at Halo Dogs keep them active without stress.

Nicknames and Quirks

Nicknamed the “Little Comedian,” Boston Terriers are known for their silly behaviour, snorting, and shadow-dog habits. They love being close to their humans and will follow you from room to room, eager to participate in everything you do.

Famous Boston Terriers

Famous Boston Terrier breed example
  • Sergeant Stubby: A decorated war hero from World War I who saved lives on the battlefield.
  • Phiz: The Boston Terrier companion of author and activist Helen Keller.
  • Jake (Men in Black): While the movie featured a Pug, many fans often confuse Jake’s look with Boston Terriers due to their similar charm and compact size.

History of the Breed

The Boston Terrier was developed in the United States in the late 19th century. Bred from a cross between English Bulldogs and now-extinct white English Terriers, the Boston Terrier became the first American breed recognized by the AKC in 1893. Today, thanks to their friendliness and manageable size, Boston Terriers are beloved companions around the world.

Grooming Needs

Boston Terriers are low-shedding and only require light brushing once or twice a week. At Halo Dogs, we use gentle, hypoallergenic shampoos and pay special attention to the ears, face folds, and nails to keep your Boston looking and feeling their best.

Health and Lifespan

  • Brachycephalic Syndrome: They benefit from our indoor climate zones and shaded outdoor areas.
  • Eye Sensitivity: We monitor and clean their eyes regularly to avoid infections.

Dogspiracy – World Premiere at Phoenix Cinema

‘DOGSPIRACY’ Shedding Light on the Global Puppy Trade

Date: Tuesday 22 July 2025
Venue: Phoenix Cinema, 52 High Rd, East Finchley, London N2 9PJ
Start Time: 8:00 PM

Documentary Launch Tackles Hidden Puppy Industry Abuses

The highly anticipated documentary DOGSPIRACY makes its world premiere at Phoenix Cinema this July, exploring the darker side of the international puppy trade. Directed by Paul Crompton and fronted by Dr Marc Abraham OBE—renowned vet, animal welfare campaigner and very good friend of Halo Dogs for many years—the film investigates the shady networks of illegal breeding, puppy smuggling, and canine fertility clinics operating under weak regulation.

In America and the UK, Dr Abraham meets compassionate decision-makers with the power to improve animal welfare laws. But his journey reveals a troubling truth: influential lobbyists and systemic barriers are preventing vital legislation from passing. The result? Ongoing legalised abuse and the silencing of those pushing for reform.

Watch the Official Trailer

International Law & Campaigning for Change

In the US, DOGSPIRACY highlights efforts to pass Victoria’s Law in Pennsylvania—a bill similar to the UK’s Lucy’s Law. Though states like California, Maryland, and New York have banned the sale of commercially bred puppies and kittens in pet stores, Pennsylvania has yet to vote on Victoria’s Law, leaving animals vulnerable to abuse.

In the UK, Lucy’s Law—championed by Dr Abraham and backed by celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Rachel Riley, and Peter Egan—became law in 2020. It bans third-party puppy and kitten sales, requiring people to buy directly from breeders or adopt from registered rescue centres.

Breed Characteristics

Physical Appearance

Compact yet sturdy, Border Terriers weigh between 5–7 kg and have a distinctive otter-like head, wiry double coat, and a naturally scruffy charm. They’re built for endurance, agility, and underground pursuit — making them nimble companions for rural adventures.

Temperament

Known for their affectionate nature, alertness, and bravery, Border Terriers are lively without being hyper. They get along well with children and other pets and love having a purpose. That’s why our tailored enrichment activities suit their eager and intelligent nature perfectly.

Exercise Needs

Border Terriers require structured physical and mental exercise. They thrive with varied play and new experiences, from agility games and scent trails to countryside exploration — all part of our Halo Dogs program.

Nicknames and Quirks

Often called the “Scruffy Gentleman” or “Tough Little Worker,” Border Terriers are famous for their persistence and digging habits. They love burrowing in blankets and are natural escape artists — which is why our countryside is fully enclosed and secure.

Grooming Needs

Border Terriers have a harsh, weather-resistant double coat that benefits from regular hand-stripping rather than clipping. At Halo Dogs, our groomers are experienced in traditional techniques and offer breed-specific bathing, ear care, and nail trimming to keep your dog comfortable and clean.

History of the Breed

The Border Terrier was bred in the Anglo-Scottish border region for fox control in the 18th century. What Kind of Music Calms Dogs?

Published: July 14, 2025

Can Music Help Calm Your Dog?

Just as music can soothe human nerves during stressful times, growing evidence suggests that dogs may benefit from calming melodies too. Whether your pup is uneasy during fireworks, suffers from separation anxiety, or simply needs help settling down, music might be a surprisingly effective tool for emotional support.

What Types of Music Do Dogs Respond To?

Several studies have shown that music can influence canine behaviour. A 2002 study by Dr. Deborah Wells found that dogs exposed to classical music spent more time lying down and less time barking or standing compared to dogs exposed to heavy metal, pop music, or silence.

In 2005, veterinary neurologist Dr. Susan Wagner determined that solo piano music created using psychoacoustic principles (featuring slower tempos and simpler tones) had the strongest calming effect. Dogs exposed to these sounds relaxed faster than those listening to general classical music.

Further research in 2012 by Dr. Lori Kogan at Colorado State University confirmed these findings. Her kennel-based study showed that classical music helped dogs sleep more and bark less. Interestingly, a 2017 study added that genres like soft rock and reggae also appeared to relax dogs, increasing heart rate variability and reducing visible stress behaviours.

Dog-Specific Calming Music

If you’d like to explore music tailored to canine ears, here are a few suggestions:

  • Sparse Piano: Epidemic Classical.
  • Canine Lullabies: Designed with a consistent beat and soft instrumentation.
  • Pet Acoustics® Pet Tunes: A pre-loaded music speaker with 90 minutes of calming tracks.
  • YouTube: Search “relaxing dog music” for hours-long playlists with soft tones.
  • Spotify: Follow pet-themed playlists under Preventive Vet or dog anxiety keywords.
  • Apps: The “Sound Proof Puppy Training” app helps with noise desensitisation using musical tracks and realistic sound effects.

When Should You Play Calming Music?

Music can help soothe dogs in a variety of common situations:

  • During crate time: Helps create a calm, restful environment in their safe space.
  • When settling into a new home: Useful for new puppies or rescue dogs adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings.
  • During travel: Reduces stress during car rides, especially if you use the same music you’ve played at home.
  • When home alone: A familiar sound can ease separation anxiety—but make sure to play it while you’re home too, so it doesn’t become a cue that you’re leaving. dog listening to reggae on yellow headphones
  • During fireworks or thunderstorms: Music can help mask scary noises and distract nervous pups.

Training Tools for Sound Sensitivity

Early and positive exposure to new sounds is key to preventing noise-related phobias. Ideally introduced during a puppy’s socialisation window (5 to 16 weeks), this training can still be helpful for older dogs too.

Trainer Victoria Stilwell collaborated with Through a Dog’s Ear to create soundtracks that gradually introduce noises like fireworks, sirens, and crowds at low volume. This method pairs calming music with gentle exposure and is ideal for counterconditioning and desensitisation work.

Tips for Playing Music for Dogs

  • Keep volume moderate or low—dogs hear four times better than humans.
  • Try multiple genres to learn your dog’s personal preferences.
  • Use music as part of your everyday routine—not just when your dog is alone.
  • Watch for signs of relaxation (yawning, lying down, slower breathing).

Dog Trapped in Well for 11 Days Finally Rescued

Owner Thanks Crews Who Rescued Dog Trapped in Well for 11 Days

Dog Missing for Over a Week Rescued by Firefighters

Fire crews rescued 10-year-old Jimmy from a well in Corby.

A grateful dog owner has thanked fire crews who rescued her 10-year-old pet Jimmy after he was found trapped at the bottom of a 13-foot (4m) well in Corby, Northamptonshire. The corgi cross was missing for 11 days before being saved by firefighters who heard him barking during a nearby call-out.

Long Search Ends in Joyful Reunion

Dorota Gruszczynska said Jimmy vanished on 21 June while out for a walk. “He chased something—maybe a deer—and just didn’t come back,” she recalled. After days of searching and raising awareness online, she feared the worst. “We thought he’d been hit by a car. I started to lose hope.”

Community Help and Drone Support

Posters were shared widely on social media, and Gruszczynska contacted Thermal Drone Support Bedfordshire for assistance. Volunteers, neighbours, and dog lovers joined in the search effort. “So many people helped,” she said. “They gave their time out of love.”

Breakthrough After 11 Days

On 2 July, firefighters from Corby Fire Station responded to a separate incident near Stephenson Way when they heard a dog barking. They spotted Jimmy stuck beneath several metal cylinders at the bottom of a deep well and contacted Gruszczynska to confirm if her dog wore a green harness—he did.

Fire Crews Lift Jimmy to Safety

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed it used a reach pole and rope system to remove cylinders and hoist Jimmy to safety.

“It was a miracle,” Gruszczynska said. “We’d searched that area so many times and called his name, but never heard him barking. I couldn’t thank the firefighters enough—they saved his life.”

Healthy and Home Again

After being rescued, Jimmy was taken to the vet. Despite being extremely hungry, he was not dehydrated. “He must’ve survived by drinking water in the well,” Gruszczynska said. “He’s recovering well and back on his feet. We’re just so relieved.”

Firefighters Praised for Compassion and Dedication

Fire crews from Corby were praised by the public and animal welfare groups for their quick thinking and kindness. “These moments remind us of the humanity in rescue work,” said one supporter online. “Thank you for bringing Jimmy home.”

Final Thoughts

Stories like Jimmy’s remind us of the power of persistence, community, and professional rescue services. At Halo Dogs Rescue & Rehabilitation Charity, we continue to advocate for swift intervention and coordinated support when dogs go missing or suffer trauma.
